I'm going to be completely honest when I say that I was super nervous for 5th grade. It is a huge adjustment from 1st grade but it has already proved to be such a rewarding experience. I am definitely being challenged and asked to step outside of my comfort zone. I am so excited to see how this helps me grow as a future educator! Today I had the opportunity to begin the novel study I started based on the book City of Ember by (insert author here). I was really excited to start this study because I have been working really hard to prepare myself to make it super exciting and hands on for my students! I really would like to incorporate many different language arts standards in this on going novel study so that it seems very natural to what the students are learning. I quickly realized how much of a task that can be but I am still so excited to work through this book with my students. To start it off we read Chapters one and two and showed the movie trailer as our hook. This got the kids really excited because they were able to see a visual of the book before reading. I was a able to choose a standard on making predictions (insert standard) specifically for the worksheet we did today. I really just wanted to get the students thinking about the beginning of the story and encourage them to think more critically about what information they were presented in chapter one. I was able to start their novel study folders after they finished and was also able to give immediate feedback on their papers. They have been made aware that they are responsible for looking at their feedback and correcting any misconceptions so that we are all able to move forward. I was also able to collect data from these worksheets to see what level each student was thinking on. This made it easier for me to pair them in groups for the novel study so that every students' learning is being fostered. I am so excited to introduce the part where we begin to make our very own cities because I know that they are going to love how creative they can be with it!
Overall, the kids seemed to love the beginning of the novel study and I can't wait to continue the fun!
