Today I asked my focus student about his interests, just to get to know a little bit about him. He gave me the usual boy answers such as "football and dinosaurs". However the I saw the coolest thing play out when I asked him to draw a picture of something he was interested in.

Immediately when I gave him this assignment he drew a picture of his sister throwing a football to him. The picture got really interesting when he drew his "pet" dinosaur that his grandma gave him last year. As you can see, he was very detailed in drawing this donsaur and even talked about how hard it was to brush his teeth! How silly! The part that really interested me was when he told me his name. He claimed that his dinosaur's name was "Dose" and that the "O sounds like that because of the E at the end." It showed not only his phonemic awareness but also that he really does listen in class. My focus student really struggles with not getting distracted in class and often times I wonder whether or not he actually is learning all that he should. He really surprised me when he told me this!
